Venice Carnival

The Venice Carnival, first mentioned in documents in 1094, has its roots in ancient festivals such as Roman Saturnalia and Greek Dionysia. These celebrations offered people the opportunity to overcome social barriers and celebrate exuberantly. Over the centuries, the Venetian carnival developed into a magnificent spectacle with elaborate masks and costumes that attracted visitors from all over the world. After an interruption during Napoleonic rule, the carnival was officially revived in 1979 and has since consolidated its significance as a worldwide symbol of art and freedom.

This year's Venice Carnival will take place from February 14 to March 4, 2025. The program includes a variety of events, including traditional balls, mask competitions, and cultural performances. A special highlight is the opening ceremony on the Grand Canal, during which a breathtaking water parade with illuminated gondolas and artfully disguised performers kicks off the festivities.

Another significant event is the Feast of Mary (“Festa delle Marie”), which takes place on February 22, 2025. This historic procession commemorates the liberation of kidnapped brides in the 9th century and starts at 14:30 at the traghetto in Santa Sofia. The parade takes you through the city and ends at St. Mark's Square, where the participants are honored in magnificent costumes.

The traditional angel flight (“Volo dell'Angelo”) will be celebrated at 12:00 on February 23, 2025. A prominent figure, secured on a steel cable, floats down from the campanile across St. Mark's Square and officially opens the carnival festivities. This tradition dates back to the 16th century and attracts numerous spectators every year.

During the entire carnival, the streets and squares of Venice are transformed into a stage for artists, musicians and acrobats.
