The Vienna Opera Ball is one of Austria's most prestigious social events and has a long and fascinating history. Its roots go back to 1877, when a big ball was held at the Vienna State Opera for the first time. After interruptions during the two World Wars, the ball was reintroduced in its current form in 1956. Since then, it has become a symbol of Viennese ball culture and combines tradition, elegance and artistic excellence. With its world-famous waltzes, top-class musical performances and prominent guests from politics, business and culture, the Opera Ball attracts an international audience every year.
The opening of the Vienna Opera Ball follows a precisely defined procedure and is one of the highlights of the event. The Young Women and Young Men's Committee opens the ball with a solemn polonaise, followed by an artistic choreography by the Vienna State Ballet. The opening is accompanied by the sounds of the Vienna Philharmonic and renowned opera stars, who present arias and waltzes by Johann Strauss and other masters of classical music. After the official opening, the master of ceremonies shouts with the famous words “Alles waltz! “Off to dance, and the ballroom is transformed into a dazzling sea of dancing couples.
The Vienna Opera Ball 2025 will take place on February 27 at the magnificent Vienna State Opera. The theme of the event this year is “Classic meets Modernity” and promises a particularly glamorous night. In addition to the traditional elements of the opening, guests can expect musical performances by international opera stars and a new production by the Vienna State Ballet. For this special occasion, the Vienna State Opera is decorated with elaborate floral arrangements and shines in a festive atmosphere.
In addition to the main hall, which is dominated by classical waltzes, there are numerous other musical areas that provide variety. Live music ranging from jazz to modern dance music to traditional sounds is offered in various rooms of the State Opera. Renowned top Austrian chefs, who spoil guests with exquisite dishes and fine wines, provide culinary delights. The opera ball is not only a ball of classical music, but also a place of enjoyment and social encounters.
Another special highlight of the Vienna Opera Ball is the so-called “women's donation”, an exclusive gift that every lady receives as a reminder of the ball. This tradition dates back to the 19th century and makes the Opera Ball even more unique for many visitors. In addition, international coverage ensures that the ball receives great attention not only in Austria but worldwide. The Vienna Opera Ball thus remains one of the most outstanding cultural events in Europe and a brilliant symbol of the Viennese ball tradition.
